I attended the CIEHF advanced DSE assessors course and found the learning gained in this invaluable to assist me in my professional role. It enabled me to gain a more robust approach to assessing staff and DSE workstations by incorporating and utilising ergonomic analysis methods. The introduction of the tools provided assisted in identifying problems and evidencing cost effective solutions.

About this course
Course parts are designed to meet the core competencies of the CIEHF Advanced Skill level with each based on real life scenarios which delegates interact with over the two days
- Musculoskeletal injuries and disorders (MSDs) are the most common type of serious injury and disease worldwide, and in many countries stress related mental health disorders (MHDs) are prevalent.
- Delegates look at ways to remove the barriers for their prevention in the workplace
- A combination of innovative yet proven training approaches and techniques will help assessors raise attainment by improving:
- competence (matched against advanced skill level of the CIEHF)
- confidence through practice and completion of exercises, knowledge
- through a stronger knowledge of what an Advanced DSE assessment consists of and what level a an advanced Level 3 assessment report should be at

Professional competence assessment
Throughout the two days delegates undergo continual assessment in line with the CIEHF and IEA core competencies of Advanced skill
Professional competence is assessed by evaluation of:
- Pre-course work – reading and activity
- Completion of the workbook and classroom practical exercises Day 1 and Day 2
- Post course work - submit report
On successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- Carry out an Advanced DSE assessment (based on a case study Day 2)
- Complete a report based on the assessment (Day 2 and Post course submission)
- Assist in the development of reference and resource materials to support management systems ISO45001
- Focus on broad organisational / professional issues relating to removing barriers to more effective prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders (MSDs) and stress related mental health disorders (MHDs)
- Clarify if external advice is correct and if not feel confident to see further clarification
- Develop a CPD plan of action that demonstrates a focus on applying and enhancing your knowledge and skill (Day 2 and post-course)
- A highly structured and interactive course designed to maximise practical time on the training days. Achieved by splitting the course into three parts and giving directed reading and practical exercises:
Part 1
Pre-course work (1.5 hours) – a pre-course pack will be sent out with full instructions on what to do
You must complete the pre-course assignment that consists of quick summary readings to enable you to contribute to the course and some simple data collection
Part 2
Training days (13 hours) – see course schedule below
During the training days you will complete classroom exercises, participate in discussion and solve problems raised during the case studies
You will get time to reflect on what has been learnt and decide how to put this in practice

Day ONE
09.00- 09.10 Welcome and Introductions
09.10 – 09.30 How the professional course works: CIEHF professional requirements, and professional practice. The importance of an evidence-based approach to ergonomic assessments. What is human centred design (HCD)?
09.30 – 09.45 Personal injury claim case study: What a tribunal would consider. Why an evidence-based approach is needed. What you will learn on the course to help you?
09.45 – 09.55 Thinking and problem solving: Developing a fresh toolbox of ideas when undertaking assessments utilising creative ergonomic principles, innovative techniques and design thinking.
09.55 – 10.15 Levels of assessment: A case study reveals how an Advanced DSE assessment is broken down, and what should go into an Advanced DSE assessment report. A basic report is examined and then re-examined to consider ways to improve.
10.15 – 10.40 Ergonomics: What is ergonomics? What you need to know? What is meant by Human Factors? Why it is essential that cognitive, and organisational components and not just physical ones are included during the assessment.
10.40– 10.50 Break
10.50– 11.20 Ergonomic analysis - Keeping the DSE user safe when seated: Making sense of medical data, clarifying external advice. Body facts? Why conditions occur? Analysis of sensory, cognitive and physical design considerations. Reference data to quote in reports
11.20 – 11.35 Ergonomic analysis - Keeping the DSE user safe when standing: What to include in the assessment? Use of the sit-stand assessment tool. Benefits & risks? Latest research and trends - are standing desks a worthwhile investment?
11.35– 12.00 Ergonomic analysis - Environment and wellness: Comfort, health, performance, air quality, psychoacoustics, vision and lighting, temperature, humidity. Using quantitative data to support qualitative findings. What evidence to collect and how to validate?
12.00 – 13.00 Ergonomic analysis (P1) - Ergonomic methodology & tools: How to quickly diagnose and correct postural problems accurately using: RULA, Body Discomfort Diagrams, Anthropometric tables, Video analysis, Task analysis.
How to use the quantitative data to support your qualitative findings, how to refer to this data as evidence based research and ways of interpreting findings to support the report recommendations.
13.00– 13.30 Lunch
13.30– 14.00 Ergonomic analysis – Stress and mental health: The CSP model and workplace design. Stress management standards, stress tools. When to use and how to refer to this in the report.
14.00- 14.30 Ergonomic analysis - Agile screen workerTM : Hot desking, activity-based working, just in time work spaces, flexible workspaces. How to assess? What are the latest thoughts in relation to Agile working wellness?
14.30- 15.00 Ergonomic analysis - Keeping the DSE user with special needs safe: Who’s competent? What type of assessment? What should be covered? Avoiding pitfalls. How to keep safe when changing patterns of work. Using ergonomic tools and checklists.
15.00 – 15.50 Ergonomic analysis (P2) – ErgoLab – How to select products using ergonomic methodology and tools. A number of conditions are considered without adjustment, and then with adjustment. How to record details in the report so that the client can understand clearly why a product is recommended.
15.50– 16.00 Break
16.00 – 16.45 Ergonomic analysis – Review of the day and what is covered in Day 2
Day TWO
A practical day where delegates evaluate reports and assessments to find ways to improve the report by utilising tools, techniques and methods learnt on Day One. Cases examined will reinforce the key competencies that the course has been designed to improve.
09.00- 12.30 The Advanced DSE assessment and report – through the deconstruction of poor reports – delegates will learn the importance of the assessment, the collection of facts and ergonomic analysis. This is essential learning and with the benefit of the trainer’s extensive expertise delegates will gain expert knowledge
- Review of Day One and how each part slots into the Advanced DSE Assessment
- What companies class as Advanced DSE assessments, are they Advanced? Look at methods to improve, utilising what was learnt on Day One
- Ergolab practical 1 and 2– Full assessment of person and chair, person and product. Determining validity of recommendations made by outside advisors e.g. is this the correct chair, is this the correct product, what justification has the assessor or advisor given? Have the considered all options?
- Determining if the report writer has used an evidence- based approach and if so, have they used it effectively i.e. reference in the report? Does the data collected make sense?
- This section will give the delegate the chance to see how the tools can be utilised in different ways from looking at four different cases
11.00– 11.15 Break
This section will improve the core competencies and will be enhanced in the PM section where a single assessment is undertaken.
11.15 – 12.30 How to ensure that you are recognised within your organisation as the go-to-person regarding this competency to perform Advanced DSE assessments to prevent MSDS and stress related MHDs
- How this can tie into ISO 45001 OH&S standard and overall increase in wellness.

12.30– 13.00 Lunch
13.00– 14.15 - Practical – Using a Case Study delegates work in pairs to complete an advanced DSE assessment following which they compile a report utilising all that has been learnt on the course.
The report will be completed to a level that you would submit to a client. The report will be examined and must demonstrate your competencies of being able to undertake an advanced DSE assessment and complete report writing competencies without assistance
