A word of caution and why you should choose an Ergonomist and not an ergonomic advisor

 Person with a musculoskeletal disorder

The lady above was assessed by a company offering a free assessment, who had sold their services as 'ergonomic' assessors to the employer.  The lady suffered from upper limb pain, and instead of resolving her problem, the ergonomic advisor, exposed her to further injury and the need to take time off work, as well as exposing the employer to potential litigiation.

The ergonomic assessor worked for an ergonomic product supplier and relied on commission and instead of moving the lady onto the straght part of the desk. He advised the lady's employer that ergonomic products were necessary: a chair, a corner piece and a writing slope, which came to a total value of £1,200.00, as the employer knew no difference paid for the equipment without query.

The lady's condition deterioated and the employer contacted us to carry out an ergonomic asessment. All that was needed in terms of physical adjustments was to mover her to the straight part of the desk and the resultant cost was our fee. The equipment was returned to the supplier as it was not needed. A short investigation around the office found a number of other staff who had similar problems had been sold expensive equipment which was not necessary.

This is one of many cases that we come across where employees are exposed to injury due to the  inexperience of ergonomic assessors or sales people masquerading as ergonomic specialists. Employers in these instances are misled by the use of claimed expertise and as such put themselves at an increased risk of litigaiton. At the end of the day the ergonomic advisor will revert back to his or her sales title and plead ignorance and the blame is then passed onto the employer for failing to do a suitable and sufficient risk assessment.
